2014-2019 Ram 1500 diesel pick-up recalled due to fire hazard

A faulty emissions control component may leak and increase risk of a vehicle fire.

American Special Vehicles (ASV) – the company responsible for converting US pick-up specialist Ram’s cars to right-hand drive for the Australian market – has issued a recall of 438 examples of its 2014-2019 model-year 1500 diesel pick-up due to a defective part that may increase risk of fire.

The recall notice, lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), says the defect relates to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler – a component of the vehicle’s emissions control system – fitted to diesel engine equipped models that may crack, resulting in a coolant leak into the intake manifold.

ASV says if coolant does leak into the intake manifold, this may increase the risk of a vehicle fire resulting in an accident, injury to vehicle occupants and other road users, and proper damage.

CarAdvice has contacted an ASV spokesperson regarding any known failures or incidents in Australia and will update this story with the response.

ASV will notify owners of affected vehicles of the recall via mail to arrange inspection and repair of the faulty unit.

Affected vehicles were sold between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2019.
