Project Cars: 1971 Land Rover Series IIA

The CarAdvice team reveals what's hidden away in their sheds and backyards awaiting some TLC.

My first 4WD, which my brother, father and I fetched from Cooma for $2500. We bought it because at the time, it was my dream car. And in many ways, it still is.

It’s quite original and weather-beaten, and served as my first 4X4 for about five years, doing lots of camping, off-roading and road trips during that time.

It eventually got knocked back at rego time, and the slow march towards getting back on the road has taken many twists and turns since. It’s got more leaks than a colander, runs worse than a minority government, and dives like a World Cup footballer when those brakes eventually bite.

Juggling a busy work life with a fast-growing young family means this project is a slow, meandering journey. It will be on club plates eventually, and won’t be needed for daily duties. I can’t wait.

  • Current Status: The never-ending shed-bound project
  • Odometer: 03978 miles (but who knows how many times it’s been around the clock)
  • Kms since last update: 0
  • Next on ‘to do’ list: Re-fit the radiator and alternator, and get the bloody thing running (however poorly).
