2021 Genesis G70 spy photos – update
It might be cloaked in camouflage but South Korea’s answer to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C Class is about to get an important update.
The Genesis G70 has only been on sale in Australia for 12 months – via one dealership, in Sydney, for now – however Hyundai’s luxury division is already working on a facelift.
An updated version of the Genesis G70 is due in local showrooms either late this year or early next – about midway through the car’s five-year model cycle.
Although these photos show a car cloaked in camouflage, we can see the 2021 Genesis G70 sports sedan will gain the signature headlights and tail-lights that appeared on the new Genesis G80 limousine and Genesis GV80 luxury SUV.
Twin horizontal lenses front and rear are designed the give the new Genesis range an unmistakable brand identity, especially at night.

Despite making a stalled start in Australia, Hyundai says it is fully committed to the Genesis brand locally and will begin to open more standalone showrooms across the country in the coming months and years.
By the first half of next year, Genesis showrooms in Australia should have a line up of at least three vehicles – the updated Genesis G70, the all-new Genesis G80 limousine and the all-new Genesis GV80 SUV.
More Genesis models are due to follow – including possibly an electric sports car that was unveiled in concept form at the New York Auto Show last year – although the company is yet to reveal any further details.
Although the spy photos don’t show it, CarAdvice understands the 2021 Genesis G70 interior will get a major makeover to improve the differentiation between it and Hyundai models.
It is unclear whether the Genesis G70 will get a power boost for its current twin turbo 3.3-litre V6 (272kW/510Nm) shared with the Kia Stinger, or switch to a bigger engine.
Recent overseas reports claimed the updated Genesis G70 was in line to adopt the larger and presumably more powerful twin turbo 3.5-litre V6 from the new Genesis G80 limousine and Genesis GV80 SUV, however those rumours have not been confirmed.
When Genesis launched in Australia in May 2019, the global boss of the division said at the time that prices would not be negotiable.
However, this month, Genesis Australia began running a promotion offering 20 per cent off selected models, presumably to make way for the rush of fresh metal coming later in the year.
So far this year Genesis has posted a modest sales gain (up 8.8 per cent) in a market that is down by 20.9 per cent from the start of January through to the end of April.
However, that growth is from a low base: from 34 to 37 vehicles reported as sold over the first four months of this year.
Last year, Genesis Australia sold just 103 vehicles although it had only opened its first showroom in May
