2020 Ford Puma ST teased

Ford's compact SUV will be its next model to wear the ST badge, but plans for Australian remain unclear.

Ford has teased what appears to be a sporty ST version of its 2020 Puma compact SUV in a new video posted to its Twitter account.

Ford’s video shows distinctly Puma lines with tell-tale features of the brand’s sportier ST variants, including ST badging, alloy wheels, and Recaro sports seats.

Ford Australia has not confirmed if the Puma ST will come to Australia, however a spokesperson has previously told CarAdvice the brand would “like to apply the Ford Performance philosophy to as many models as we can where appropriate.”

Based on the same “B3” platform as the Fiesta ST, the Puma ST is expected to pick up the model’s 147kW/290Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder, giving it a considerable boost over the basic Puma’s 92kW/170Nm 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine.

It’s unclear what transmission the Puma ST will be equipped with, however the model accelerating in the teaser video sounds unmistakably like a manual transmission. Additionally, the Fiesta ST is only offered with a six-speed manual.

The Ford Puma ST also picks up more sporty exterior styling, as has been spotted on a prototype.

The 2020 Ford Puma is due in Australia in the second half of this year.

The lineup will consist of Puma, Puma ST-Line and the ST-Line V. For more information on these models, click here.
