Lamborghini resumes production, will unveil new model this week
The raging bull begins producing cars again after a seven-week pause and plans to reveal a new model.
Italian supercar maker Lamborghini has resumed production at its Sant’Agata Bolognese plant in Italy following COVID-19 lockdowns – and has announced it will unveil a new model later this week, on Thursday 7 May.
Lamborghini restarted production after Italy’s prime minister said on 26 April that certain industries could resume work from May 4.
“We are ready to restart with great energy, but also with strict protocols,” Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali said in a statement.
“We were the first Italian automotive company to close and [the safety of our people] continues to be our guiding principle for a well-reasoned and safe recovery.”
The brand has also slated a 7 May virtual unveiling for a new car it claims will “complete [Lamborghini’s] model range".
Details of the new model remain scarce, however international reports suggest it may be a plug-in hybrid version of the brand’s Urus SUV.
Lamborghini paused production on March 13 in response to the coronavirus pandemic, with Italy hit especially hard in the early stages. Parts of Lamborghini's facility were used to assist in building medical equipment during the coronavirus pandemic.
Last week, Porsche and parent company Volkswagen resumed production at German facilities a day after the United Auto Workers union warned against US carmakers resuming production.
