McLaren Speedtail takes on a fighter jet

McLaren's fastest car ever takes on a near-$200 million jet in a new online video.

A McLaren Speedtail – the brand’s first ever hyper GT car – has been put up against a fighter jet in what might be the most expensive drag race in history.

Orchestrated by the BBC’s Top Gear TV show, the £1.75 million (AU$3.4 million) Speedtail was put head to head against a roughly £100 million (AU$194 million) F35-B Lightning fighter jet for a lap of an improvised course at an airfield.

Despite the Speedtail’s hybrid 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8’s 773kW and 1150Nm output, a claimed sub-13-second 0-300km/h sprint, and a good start from driver/presenter Chris Harris, the hyper GT was no match for the F35-B.

Pulling up to 7 Gs of lateral force and capable of a top speed of 1931km/h, the jet overtook the Speedtail on the home straight to secure victory.

While an F35-B isn’t likely to end up parked in an Australian driveway, a Speedtail just might with reports McLaren has assigned at least one Speedtail to Australia during its global allocation this year.
