Tesla Semi electric truck delayed until 2021

The electric car specialist's answer to heavy freight vehicles has been delayed again.

Tesla has announced another delay for its heavy-duty freight offering – the Semi – pushing first deliveries of the model back to 2021.

Mentioned in Tesla’s first quarterly report of 2020 – which saw the brand post its third consecutive quarter-year of profit despite COVID-19 shutdowns – the electric vehicle specialist advised “we are shifting our first Tesla Semi deliveries to 2021.”

This means the model’s delivery has now been pushed back two years from original claims of 2019 production.

The recent delay is not the first for the Semi truck, with the brand’s third quarter-year report of 2019 stating Tesla was “planning to produce limited volumes of Tesla Semi in 2020”.

Last month, it appeared the model was nearing production after spy shots emerged of prototypes being transported back to Tesla’s Californian headquarters following winter testing at its Alaskan facility.

CarAdvice believes Tesla does not have plans to offer the model in Australia for the time being, as the Tesla website lists only the US, Canada, Netherlands, Norway and UK as eligible for pre-order.

The Semi will be powered by four independent electric motors on the rear axle, claimed to consume less than 2kWh per 1.6km. The truck's coefficient drag is listed at only 0.36.

When unveiled in 2017, Tesla claimed the Semi would be able to complete the 0-60mph (0-97km/h) sprint in just 5.0 seconds

The electric car specialist also claims that with a full payload of 36,287kg, the 0-60mph dash can be done in 20 seconds with driving range options of 480km or 800km.
