Electric ute inspired by Land Rover Defender: Bollinger B2

US electric car start-up Bollinger has released images of its heavy duty pick-up that borrows some of its box-shape design from the Land Rover Defender.

US electric car start-up Bollinger has revealed the next iteration of the no-frills off-road truck, called the B2 Cab Chassis.

Bollinger is calling it a world first as well, being a Class 3 cab chassis with electric power.

For reference, a Class 3 truck in the USA has a gross mass of 4,536–6,350 kg, with examples being a Ford F-350 an F-450, as well as the Ram 3500.

Coming in single-cab and dual-cab formats, the Bollinger B2 Cab Chassis provides a big blank canvas at the rear end for literally anything: camper bodies, service bodies or all manner of military, commercial or emergency service applications. The cab can be had as a cutaway as well, giving the possibility of walk-through setups.

Because of the huge quoted payload of 5,000 pounds (2,268kg), the versatility and utility of the B2 cab chassis will be almost endless. An electric driveline means body modifications are a relatively simple affair, and the wheelbase can be varied to suit applications.

The B2 Cab Chassis sits atop the same patent-pending E-Chassis as the B1 and B2 trucks, which uses two electric motors (situated at each axle) combine for a total output of 458kW and 906Nm.

Those motors are powered by a 120 kWh battery pack, which can also act as a large power source for tools and other equipment, and can be optioned up to 180kWh. Range is estimated to be around 320 kilometres according to EPA testing, but that will depend on how big and heavy the Cab Chassis ends up being.

Charging times are as little as 75 minutes with a DC fast charger, or 10 hours through 220V.

The Bollinger promises to be good off-road as well, with both axles electronically joined to make a 4X4 driveline. Bollinger also quotes a two-speed ‘Hi/Lo’ gearing setup, as well as height-adjustable suspension with 4” drop portal hubs. This gives you, according to Bollinger, up to 380mm of ground clearance and 250mm of axle articulation.

Pricing and availability is yet to be announced, however Bollinger has said the B2 Chassis Cab will be made available to commercial outfitters in late 2021 in both full cab and cutaway-cab variants.
