Volkswagen ID.4 Coupe electric car caught on camera, likely coming to Australia

The Volkswagen ID.4 has been photographed while testing ahead of production. One of VW's first electric cars is a likely addition to Australian showrooms.

Volkswagen’s electric ID.4 Coupe SUV has been caught on camera wearing minimal camouflage overseas, before production is due to ramp up – and Volkswagen Australia has shown interest in the model for a possible 2022 launch.

“[The ID.4 Coupe] makes a lot of sense for our market,” a Volkswagen Australian spokesperson told CarAdvice. “From 2022 onwards is when we’ll start introducing ID models.”

The photos show the ID.4 Coupe’s more sloped roofline compared to the regular ID.4 SUV. While camouflage covers part of the Coupe’s headlight and tail-light designs, these are likely to match details seen on a mostly-uncovered ID.4 prototype.

The Volkswagen ID.4 Coupe is likely to get a sportier ‘GTX’ trim as well, with reports the model could receive the 225kW all-wheel drive powertrain debuted on the ID. Crozz concept.

Volkswagen Australia has also expressed interest in an ID.4 Coupe GTX, telling CarAdvice: “Australians love performance SUVs … the [SUV category] continues to grow.”

By comparison, the standard ID.4 is expected to adopt the 150kW rear-wheel drive powertrain from the smaller ID.3.

If the ID.4 Coupe GTX does receive the beefier powertrain, expect the model to cover the 0-100km/h dash in less than 6.0 seconds with a driving range of up to 500km.
