Toyota releases Karl Lagerfeld edition of the C-HR

Toyota has released a limited-edition version of its C-HR city SUV, designed in partnership with the fashion house of late German designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld, who headed up French fashion brand Chanel, passed away in February 2019, but his legacy lives on in the form of his eponymous brand, which has lent its name to a high-fashion version of the hybrid C-HR in Thailand.

Toyota Australia says the Toyota C-HR by Karl Lagerfeld Limited Edition is a Thailand-only model and is not currently planned for local showrooms.

Drive

Based on the top-line HV Hi hybrid C-HR variant sold in Thailand, the Lagerfeld C-HR is powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 52kW electric motor paired to a continuously variable transmission (e-CVT).

Only 200 examples of the special Toyota C-HR will be available in the Thai market and each of them will be priced from 1.219 million Thai baht (THB), or about AU$57,470 plus on-road costs.

That's a price hike of 60,000 THB (roughly AU$2826) on the regular C-HR HV Hi, which is priced from 1.159 million THB (AU$54,596) plus on-road costs.

For that price, buyers will also receive a free set of Karl Lagerfeld accessories, including a suitcase, a handbag, a cap and a key chain, valued at 50,000 baht, or AU$2355, in total.

The key differences between the regular C-HR and the limited-edition C-HR are all aesthetic. It boasts a distinctive black-and-white exterior, with a pearl-white roof, side mirrors, side skirts, front bumper lip and rear spoiler.

Drive

The Karl Lagerfeld logo appears multiple times on the exterior of the car – as a sticker wrap on the vehicle's sides and as an emblem below the C-HR badge at the back of the car. The special edition C-HR also boasts black 17-inch alloy wheels.

The two-tone design theme has been carried through to the vehicle's interior, with two-tone leather seats emblazoned with the Karl Lagerfeld emblem with a matching two-tone dashboard.

Drive

Standard equipment on the C-HR hybrid carries through to the limited-edition, including LED tail lights, keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, a 4.2-inch multi-info instrument cluster display and a seven-inch touchscreen.

The Karl Lagerfeld model also scores safety features like automatic high beam, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, a blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and Toyota’s Pre-collision System (autonomous emergency braking).

Design of the limited-edition C-HR was a collaboration between Toyota Motors Thailand and the Karl Lagerfeld brand, overseen by Karl Lagerfeld President and CEO Pier Paolo Righi.

Collaborations between automotive companies and fashion labels have a storied history, from the Nissan Pulsar Reebok from 1990, to 1985's Carla Zampatti Ford Laser or Gucci's 2013 take on the Fiat 500.

Prior to his death at the age of 85, Lagerfeld dabbled in the automotive industry a handful of times throughout his decades-long career.

In 2000, he added his aesthetic flair to a one-of-a-kind BMW L7 limo and in 2010 he starred in a German ad for Volkswagen's Golf.
