McLaren supercar worth $455,000 driven into floodwaters in the US

The owner of a McLaren 600LT has been filmed driving the car across a flooded road in the United States, leaving the $455,000 supercar stranded amid rising floodwaters.

Footage of the incident emerged on Twitter, showing the car's owner following a pick-up truck across a main road amid heavy rain in the city of Charleston, South Carolina.

But while heavier cars were able to traverse the waters without trouble, the McLaren's lightweight carbon-fibre chassis was swept away until it hit a nearby embankment and came to a stop.

Unable to exit the vehicle, the owner could do nothing more than turn on the McLaren's hazard lights.

According to the Twitter user who originally posted the video, the car eventually "floated out and was fine" but "didn't sound great", while the owner "got out after a little while safely".

In Australia, a new model-year 2020 McLaren 600LT starts at around $496,000 plus on-road costs.

The rear-wheel-drive 600LT is powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing 441kW of power and 620Nm of torque.

The 'LT' in its name is short for 'Longtail', a moniker first attached to the attached to the British marque's F1 GTR in 1995 and used to denote its performance-enhanced models ever since.

Constructed from a carbon-fibre chassis and lightweight aluminium body panels, the 600LT can weigh as little as 1247kg.

But while this impressive power-to-weight ratio may mean the 600LT is capable of completing a 0-100km/h sprint in 2.9 seconds, it's clearly not suited to river crossings of any kind.
