Volvo Polestar 2 electric car dearer than Tesla Model 3, due in Australia late 2020

Pricing has been announced for Volvo's rival to the Tesla Model 3 as it nears its Australian debut.

Volvo's second electric car, the Polestar 2, will be dearer than a top-line Tesla Model 3 when it goes on sale in the US mid-year.

The Volvo Polestar 2 is due in North American showrooms in a few months, with the first Australian deliveries expected to follow soon after.

"Polestar 2 is still intended for Australia and we are in discussion with our colleagues [from] Polestar as to the exact timing," a Volvo Australia spokesperson told CarAdvice.

The Polestar 2 will start from US$61,200 (AU$95,050) in the US. By comparison the Tesla Model 3 range costs from US$39,990 (AU$61,890) to US$58,190 (AU$90,370) depending on battery range and performance.

US pricing for various options has also been released, with metallic paint and 20-inch wheels each costing US$1200 (AU$1860), and a Nappa leather interior adding US$4000 (AU$6200) to the asking price.

A US$5000 (AU$7760) Performance pack is also listed which includes Brembo Brakes, adjustable Ohlins dampers and the 20-inch optional wheels, however Polestar has not said if the pack will alter the model’s claimed 304kW/660Nm output and 440km driving range.

Last year, Polestar announced UK pricing for the model at £49,900. At the time, this converted to AU$90,900, however is now closer to AU$96,350.
