2021 Nissan Ariya electric SUV revealed in patent – UPDATE: Teaser video

Nissan's first all-electric SUV close to debut, Australian outpost keen on a local launch.

UPDATE, JULY 10: A new teaser video has been released for the 2021 Nissan Ariya electric SUV ahead of its July 15 unveiling. This story is otherwise unchanged.

UPDATE, JUNE 30: Nissan has confirmed a July 15 unveiling for its new 2021 Ariya electric SUV, following the now iconic Leaf and e-NV200 van as Nissan's third all-electric offering.

A single shadowy teaser image has been released in the lead-up to the big event, but, as the below design patent images show, the new model should remain fairly loyal to the concept revealed in October last year.

The July unveiling was confirmed in this week's annual shareholders meeting in Tokyo. Further details on the new model are still to come, although it is understood to have a 'global' rollout planned.

An Australian launch is still to be confirmed, but the company's local arm has confirmed it is interested in the new model.

April 28, 2020: The sleek Nissan Ariya electric concept looks ready for a faithful leap to production, if these new images are any indication.

These renderings form part of an official design patent application to confirm Nissan's ownership of the Ariya's look. In most cases, it means the images you are seeing here – if an unflattering glimpse – are what you'll see on the road in the future.

As reported by CarAdvice last year, the Ariya appears set to retain its long coupe-like roofline, intended as much to aid aerodynamics as to appeal to the growing number of buyers drawn to 'lifestyle' SUV designs.

So far, Nissan has showcased only the styling of the Ariya SUV concept, leaving out any useful technical information like battery capacity and driving range.

The Japanese car maker did at least confirm the concept features two electric motors – one at each end in an 'e-4ORCE' all-wheel drive configuration – while riding on a battery-packed 'skateboard' architecture.

The only numbers on offer at last year's unveiling were in support of the Ariya's proportions, with its 4600mm length, 1920mm width and 1630mm tall placing it between the small Qashqai and mid-sized X-Trail in size.

Nissan has yet to offer any further details on its intentions for the Ariya concept, although we can likely expect to see it unveiled in the near future.

Will the Nissan Ariya come to Australia?

The Ariya's local potential is unclear, although the company's local spokesperson, Karla Leach, has told CarAdvice "it would be great for Australia".
