Kia ramps up electric cars overseas, Australian plans yet to be confirmed

Kia will add another electric car to its overseas line-up in 2021 and a plug-in hybrid this year, Australian plans still yet to be locked in.

Kia will introduce two new electric cars by 2021, to bring its tally to 11 electrified vehicles in its fleet by 2025.

Although names of the new models are yet to be released, Kia says there will be a plug-in hybrid this year and a full-electric vehicle (EV) slated for a 2021 release.

Kia Australia says it is too early to determine whether these models will make it to local showrooms.

"Kia Motors Australia has made no secret of the fact that we desire an electric (vehicle) to join our local range and we continue to pursue that wish," a Kia Australia spokesperson told CarAdvice.

Kia’s new electric car is set to be built on the platform it is co-developing with sister company Hyundai, and have a driving range of approximately 480 kilometres with a fast-charging time of less than 20 minutes.

As reported by AutoBlog, the hybrid model is said to take cues from the HabaNiro crossover revealed at the 2019 New York motor show (pictured above), and the Imagine concept that’s due to begin production in 2021 or 2022 (pictured below).

Currently, Kia has two electric cars in showrooms in other countries – the E-Niro small SUV and E-Soul hatchback – however the models are not yet available in Australia due to overseas demand.

The Kia Niro SUV and Kia Optima sedan are also offered with plug-in hybrid options overseas.

Earlier this year, Hyundai invested in Californian EV-builder Canoo to co-develop EV ‘skateboard’ architecture to be shared with Kia.
