2020 Tesla Model 3 price rises by up to $6000

Tesla's most affordable electric car just received its second price hike in Australia in less than a year.

Tesla's most affordable electric car in Australia, the Model 3 sedan, has had its second price rise since going on sale less than a year ago.

The Tesla Model 3 range now starts at $73,900 plus on road-costs for the base model Standard Range Plus.

That's an increase of $6000 compared to the late 2019 price of $67,900 plus on-road costs, and $7900 more than Tesla Model 3's initial launch price in mid 2019 of $66,000 plus on-road costs.

Meanwhile, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range now starts at $91,613 excluding on-road costs, while the flagship Tesla Model 3 Performance tops out at $102,013 plus on-road costs. Both represent price rises of more than $2000 each compared to their most recent list prices.

Customarily, Tesla price rises do not necessarily include equipment changes or updates.

Tesla boss Elon Musk explained in 2019: "We don't do model years. We just roll in improvements as they come."

The rear-wheel-drive Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus has a top speed of 225km/h, a New European Driving Cycle-certified (NEDC) range of 460km and a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.6 seconds.

The all-wheel-drive Tesla Model 3 Long Range is powered by two independent electric motors and has up to 620km of range (NEDC), a top speed of 233km/h, and completes the 0-100km/h dash in a claimed 4.6 seconds. The Tesla Model 3 Long Range generates a combined output of 258kW/509Nm.

Finally, the Tesla Model 3 Performance model shares the same dual-motor setup as the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, but has a claimed top speed of 261km/h, a 0-100km/h sprint in 3.4 seconds, and an NEDC range of 560km. It offers a combined power output of 335kW/637Nm.

The Standard Range Plus rides on 18-inch wheels and scores a Partial Premium Interior as standard, which includes 12-way power adjustable heated front seats, premium seat material and trim, an immersive audio system, a centre console with storage, four USB ports and docking for two smartphones.

The Long Range and Performance models gain 19-inch wheels or 20-inch wheels respectively, plus Tesla's Premium Interior as standard.

This adds heated front and rear seats, premium audio including 14 speakers, one subwoofer and two amps, LED fog lights and interior floor mats to the existing interior on the Standard Range Plus.

All cars come with Tesla's Standard Connectivity which provides access to most connectivity features over Wi-Fi only, in addition to basic maps and navigation and music streaming over Bluetooth.

The Long Range and Performance models also both receive one year of Tesla's Premium connectivity as standard, providing satellite maps, in-car internet streaming capabilities, more frequent over-the-air software updates and access to an internet browser.

Tesla Model 3 cars do not offer Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or AM radio and instead provide owners music and media via smartphone connectivity. All models also receive a tinted glass roof with ultraviolet and infrared protection, power folding and heated side mirrors and custom driver profiles.

All Tesla Model 3 variants score a 15-inch central touchscreen, remote climate control, voice-activated controls and Tesla's Autopilot system as standard, which enables the cars to steer, accelerate and brake automatically for other vehicles and pedestrians.

Tesla's over-the-air software updates are available to all Tesla vehicles at no extra cost.

At almost 4.7 metres long and just under two metres wide, the Tesla Model 3 offers a total cargo volume of 542 litres when you include the front trunk and underfloor storage as well as the 425L boot.

All new Model 3 variants receive Tesla's four-year, 80,000km vehicle warranty, while the Standard Range Plus and Performance models receive an eight-year/160,000km battery and drive unit warranty and the Long Range model scores an eight-year/192,000km battery and drive unit warranty.
