Land Rover has released details of the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of its Discovery Sport mid-size and Range Rover Evoque compact SUVs, ahead of an Australian debut in the first half of 2021.
Under the bonnet of both models is the same ‘P300e’ powertrain, which combines a new 147kW 1.5-litre turbocharged ‘Ingenium’ three-cylinder petrol engine with an 80kW electric motor located on the rear axle for combined outputs of 227kW of power and 540Nm of torque.
Energy is stored in a 15kWh lithium-ion battery pack located underneath the rear seats.

Land Rover's PHEV system is at its most efficient in the Evoque, where Land Rover claims an all-electric range of 66 kilometres, combined fuel economy on the stringent European WLTP cycle of 1.4 litres per 100 kilometres, and combined WLTP CO2 emissions of just 32 grams per kilometre.

The Discovery Sport’s additional heft dampens those figures, cutting electric range to 62km, increasing combined fuel use to 1.6L/100km and raising CO2 emissions to 36g/km – well below the EU’s 95g/km fleet-wide average to be enforced on carmakers in Europe in 2021.
Land Rover claims 0-100km/h acceleration times of 6.4 seconds and 6.6 seconds for the Evoque P300e and Discovery Sport P300e respectively. Both SUVs are capable of reaching speeds of up to 135km/h on electricity alone, after which the electric motor is disconnected to reduce mechanical drag and improve efficiency.
P300e-equipped cars offer three methods of charging. Plugging the vehicle to a three-pin domestic wall socket will deliver a full charge from empty in 6 hours and 42 minutes, while using a 7kW AC wallbox or public charging point will boost the battery from zero-to-80 per cent in 1 hour and 42 minutes.
The fastest option involves the use of a DC public fast-charger, at which the same zero-to 80-per cent charge can be completed in just 30 minutes, at a speed of 32kW.
Three hybrid-specific drive modes are available. The default ‘HYBRID’ mode combines the petrol engine and electric motor to optimise efficiency, ‘EV’ forces the vehicle to run on electric power alone, while ‘SAVE’ prioritises the three-cylinder engine to maintain the battery’s current state of charge.
The three-cylinder engine makes its Jaguar Land Rover range debut in the Evoque and Discovery Sport PHEVs, and is 27kg lighter than the company’s existing 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor.
The 1.5-litre mill is mated as standard to a belt-integrated starter-generator – as found in existing mild-hybrid Evoque and Discovery Sport models – which delivers quicker stop-start functionality from a standstill than a traditional starter motor, and combines with the a larger lithium-ion battery and new brake-by-wire system to enable up to 0.2g of deceleration through regenerative braking.
A new eight-speed automatic transmission is fitted, which claims to be both 5kg lighter and better suited to the characteristics of the three-cylinder engine and hybrid system than the nine-speed gearbox utilised by the rest of the range.
Discovery Sport and Evoque plug-in hybrid buyers will have access to Land Rover’s ‘Intelligent InControl Remote’ smartphone app, allowing owners to monitor their vehicle’s battery charge, designate specific time periods for home charging (e.g. during off-peak, cheaper times) and pre-condition the cabin and 15kWh battery to optimise range and comfort.
The Land Rover Discovery Sport P300e and Range Rover Evoque P300e are scheduled to arrive on Australian shores in the second quarter of 2021.
