New Hyundai Sonata due in Australia late 2020
The new generation Hyundai Sonata will be in Australian showrooms at the end of 2020 – about a year later than originally planned.
While the 2021 Hyundai Sonata sedan will likely receive attention for its bold styling – with triangular daytime running lights that blend into the accent lines either side of the bonnet – it will initially be missing one of the key ingredients that has made the current model so popular in Australia.
The current Hyundai Sonata sedan is powered by a choice of 2.4-litre non-turbo or 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines, the latter a popular choice among police fleets across Australia as general duties response vehicles.
However, when the new generation Hyundai Sonata arrives in Australia it will initially only get a new 2.5-litre non-turbo petrol engine. A turbocharged option may follow but is yet to be confirmed. Overseas, the new Hyundai Sonata is available with 1.6-litre turbo or 2.5-litre non-turbo petrol engines.
Hyundai will no doubt be looking forward to the arrival of the new model. Although the current Hyundai Sonata experienced an 18 per cent sales slide last year, it was still the sixth best-seller in the segment behind the Toyota Camry, Mazda6, Skoda Octavia, Subaru Liberty, and Volkswagen Passat.
Meanwhile, Hyundai is reportedly still working on a sporty Sonata N-Line version. While it won’t have quite the same performance of the hardcore Hyundai i30N hot hatch, it is expected to bring some pace to the mid-size sedan segment.
