Porsche’s new GT3 Cup car

The press release says in its first line, "The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is entering the 2008 motorsport season with engine output increased to 420 bhp [309kW]."

But that's only a jump of 20hp [15kW] over last year. Big deal, right? Wrong!

With its 309kW on tap having to move only 1150kg, the new GT3 Cup car is set to stop the pacemakers of rich old men everywhere. The major difference between last year's model and the current one, is the new rear end design, which has benefited from lessons learnt on the 997 GT3 production car.

Air venting slits ensure better dissipation of heat at the rear. The sequential six-speed transmission with interruption of engine power enables the driver to shift up under full throttle without disengaging the clutch. The transmission itself has been optimised and the gear ratios adjusted to the characteristics of the engine, which means each upshift whacks the motor right in its sweet spot.

You can option yours with Porsche's Ceramic Composite Brakes if you're partaking in the Mobil1 Supercup, and these also come with a special exhaust system to suit the competition.

Only 265 of the GT3 Cup tarmac tearers will be built, and if you have to ask how much, you're in the wrong industry...
