Polestar’s third act will be a performance SUV – report

'Polestar 3' to take on Tesla Model X, Jaguar I-Pace and a growing list of fast electric SUVs

The Polestar 3 will follow its 1 super coupe and 2 jacked-up sedan siblings with a new SUV style, according to a new report.

Refresher: Polestar, Volvo's all-electric spin-off performance brand, unveiled the 441kW/1000Nm Polestar 1 in 2017 and followed it up with the 2 in 2019. The 1 won't come to Australia, but Volvo's local arm insists the 2 will be here later this year.

As an SUV, though, it might be the as yet unconfirmed Polestar 3 that proves most compelling for buyers – assuming it isn't priced into the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus space. (Not that either model has struggled to find buyers.)

In an interview with the UK's Autocar, Polestar design boss Max Missoni said the 3 will take its cues from the Precept coupe unveiled in February.

That doesn't mean the 3 will follow the 2 by simply putting the Precept on stilts, but we can undoubtedly expect a fastback coupe-like profile.

And, of course, it'll be quick. With EVs like the Tesla Model X and 'conventional' champions like the Urus likely on its conquest list, the Polestar 3 is sure to take performance inspiration from the 1 coupe.

“We want the cars to be performance cars, not only from 0-60mph but [also] great driver’s cars with good driving dynamics,” Missoni told Autocar. “All of our cars, especially with the performance pack, will fulfil some of those desires.”

Watch for more on the 3 to surface in the months ahead.
