Tesla logs record first quarter in 2020, despite tough conditions

Tesla has bucked the trend of falling sales amid the coronavirus pandemic, logging their biggest-ever first-quarter on record.

While also logging 103,000 builds in the first three months of 2020, Tesla has reported 88,400 deliveries in the same quarter. This marks a 43 per cent increase compared to 2019 figures.

Tesla broke the sales down, with new Model 3 and Model Y accounting for 76,200 deliveries, while the older and more expensive Model S and Model X made up the remaining 12,200.

Tesla’s new Model Y SUV is turning up ahead of schedule, with production starting in January and deliveries beginning in March.

Additionally, Tesla claims its Shanghai factory is also doing “record levels of production, despite significant setbacks".

Drive

While sales are strong, Tesla implemented temporary production suspensions at their USA factory in San Francisco Bay last month following an announcement that two of its workers had contracted COVID-19.

While Tesla is happy to report sales numbers in other markets, Tesla Australia is steadfast in refusing to disclose sales figures in Australia to date. This is despite being a member of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

The Tesla Model 3 has been on sale in Australia since May 2019, but the Model Y's arrival, potentially in late 2020, remains unclear.
