Mazda to introduce 100-year anniversary models across the range

Mazda will commemorate its 100 years as a manufacturer with special editions across its passenger-car and SUV line-up.

Mazda is about to launch 100-year anniversary editions across its entire passenger car and SUV range – to celebrate its beginnings in 1920 as a cork manufacturer before it moved into three-wheeled delivery buggies in the 1930s and, eventually, became a car maker in 1960.

The only model to miss out on the special edition treatment is the Mazda BT-50 ute, which is a Ford Ranger underneath and due to be phased out some time in the next 12 months when the all-new model arrives, based on the next generation Isuzu D-Max.

Mazda is yet to reveal the timing of the arrival of the 10-year anniversary editions of the Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6 passenger cars and CX-3, CX-30, CX-5, CX-8 and CX-9 SUVs.

The first example will be based on the Mazda MX-5 sports car with a colour scheme inspired by the company’s firs automobile, the R360 Coupe.

“As a nod to the company’s roots, the 100th Anniversary Special Edition series borrows the distinctive burgundy and white of the high grade R360’s two-tone design,” the statement from Mazda says.

All special edition MX-5 models will be finished in pearl white paint and come with a burgundy interior. The colour scheme is repeated on the floor mats and floor carpet.

All special edition models will be distinguished by 100th Anniversary badging, which combines the current Mazda brand mark with the round logo created when Toyo Kogyo was first formed.

The logo appears on the front fenders, key fob, wheel caps, head rests and floor mats.

Prices and showroom arrival timing for the limited edition range are yet to be announced. Mazda says customers can register their interest to receive updates on the new models.

Mazda R360

The Mazda R360 was a small lightweight coupe introduced in 1960, powered by a four-cylinder engine (it arrived before Mazda’s foray into rotary engines) matched to an automatic transmission.

To demonstrate its reliability, Mazda drove an R360 Coupe on a 1500km endurance drive from Perth to Esperance and back in 1961.
