2020 Suzuki Swift Sport Series II coming in May

The Suzuki Swift Sport pocket rocket will be getting a round of updates in May.

The Series II model gets blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert safety systems, plus heated side mirrors.

Outside there's a new hero orange/black two-tone paint option, and inside a digital speedo will be added.

There are no mechanical changes, meaning the 103kW/230Nm 1.4-litre turbo engine continues, sending torque to the front wheels through six-speed manual or automatic transmission options.

The European-market Series II Swift Sport gets a new (8kW less powerful) engine with a fuel-saving and torque-adding 48V electrical system, and a shorter-shifting manual 'box.

That drivetrain is being explored for a possible launch for Australia in 2021.

Suzuki's local arm (which covers all regions bar Queensland) hasn't announced pricing, but given the added equipment and unfavourable exchange rate right now, pressure will be on.

The outgoing versions wear list prices of $25,490 plus on-road costs for the manual, and $27,490 for the auto.

Main competitors include the Abarth 595 ($26,990), Kia Rio GT-Line Turbo ($23,590), Ford Fiesta ST ($32,290), Renault Clio RS200 Sport ($30,990) and Volkswagen Polo GTI ($32,490).

Suzuki Australia added that "Swift GL and GLX Series II variants will be the subject of future communications".
