Audi TTS Pikes Peak commercial camera helicopter crashes

Audi was recently filming an autonomous Audi TTS climbing the famous Pikes Peak track for an upcoming advertising campaign when a camera helicopter lost control and crashed.

The severity of the crash is not clear but apparently the helicopter pilot is in hospital while three other occupants of the same helicopter were released from hospital after receiving minor medical treatment.

It's unknown as to what caused the helicopter to crash which, reports say, occurred in clear weather conditions. The advertising campaign was said to be about Audi's GPS system, showcasing its capabilities.

Audi has released a statement about the incident, saying,

"Audi is saddened by the helicopter incident that took place this morning near the summit of Pikes Peak.

"The goal of the project involves ascending Pikes Peak autonomously without a driver behind the wheel to demonstrate the capabilities of advanced driver assistance systems and GPS. The car was not involved in the incident.”

Audi has said the Pikes Peak campaign has been put on hold, but says it will recommence at a later date.
