2020 Mitsubishi Mirage pricing and specs

The Mitsubishi Mirage has been given an update  to make it more competitive with fellow bargain-basement city cars such as the Kia Picanto and MG 3.

This facelift of Mitsubishi's only conventional passenger car (non-SUV or pickup) includes a redesigned front end with a bolder grille (Dynamic Shield to use the brand's marketing parlance), sleeker-looking headlights, and a new lower bumper.

There are also new-look 15-inch alloy wheels and LED lights on the top-spec LS grade. Two new colour options called Cool Silver Metallic and Sand Yellow Metallic are available for $740 extra.

It's the first Mirage fitted with a touchscreen, a 7.0-inch unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Bluetooth/USB and digital radio. There's also a rear-view camera fitted standard.

Safety credentials are further bolstered by standard autonomous emergency braking (AEB), which the Kia also offers across the range. The LS also adds lane-departure warning. The Mirage does have a five-star ANCAP crash score, but it dates to 2013.

There are no mechanical changes, meaning the 1.2-litre petrol engine with 57kW and 100Nm remains. The base ES grade comes with a five-speed manual or CVT auto, while the LS is CVT auto-only.

Pricing kicks off at $14,990 before on-road costs for the ES manual, climbing to $16,490 for the CVT, and up to $17,490 for the LS CVT. On-road costs are subsidised and add $1500, making the entry drive-away price on the ES manual $16,490.

By contrast, a Kia Picanto S manual costs $16,190, while the auto is $17,190. The MG 3 auto kicks off at $16,490 drive-away.

Sales at the bottom end of the market are not what they once were. The so-called Micro Car segment (Mirage, Picanto and Fiat 500) is down 20 per cent this year, while the Light Car segment (home to cars like the Mazda 2, MG 3, Toyota Yaris, Suzuki Swift, etc.) is down 30 per cent.

Mitsubishi's Mirage was once the top-seller in its class in Australia, but was supplanted several years ago by the Picanto. Many rival brands have been leaving these segments altogether, citing the lack of profit margins.
