Tesla truck prototype spied following winter testing

After a delay in production, the electric truck has been spotted following a milestone in its development.

Tesla’s Semi – its fully-electric answer to a heavy-duty freight vehicle – has been spotted after completing cold weather testing in Alaska.

Two prototypes of the Semiwhich was first revealed in 2017 – were spotted in Oregon, presumably on their way back to Tesla headquarters in California.

According to the Reddit user who originally posted the picture, the red Semi was wearing Alaska license plates. It’s known that Tesla has a cold testing facility in Alaska state.

Concluding winter testing for the model would be a step towards going into production, although Tesla’s original statement the Semi would begin assembly in 2019.

When unveiled in 2017, Tesla claimed the Semi would be able to complete the 0-60mph (0-97km/h) sprint in just 5.0 seconds

The electric car specialist also claims that with a full payload of 36,287kg, the 0-60mph dash can be done in 20 seconds with driving range options of 480km or 800km.

The Semi will be powered by four independent electric motors on the rear axle and consume less than 2kWh per 1.6km. The truck's coefficient drag is listed at only 0.36.

CarAdvice believes Tesla Australia does not have plans to offer the model here anytime soon, as the Tesla website list only the US, Canada, Netherlands, Norway and UK as eligible for pre-order currently.

The Semi will enter a market of heavy-duty commercial vehicles with an increasing emphasis on emissions – Toyota and Hino recently announcing they will co-develop a hydrogen-fuel-cell truck.
