Lamborghini Aventador SVJ recalled over ‘entrapment risk’

A fault with the cars' internal door handle mechanism means owners could be locked inside.

Lamborghini has issued a voluntary global recall of 2020 Aventador SVJ Coupe and Roadster models for a fault with the vehicles' internal door mechanisms that could see owners trapped inside their own cars.

According to the Italian car maker, approximately 77 vehicles have been affected worldwide, none of them in Australia.

The fault pertains to an error made in the vehicles' assembly which could lead to the cars' internal door handles becoming dysfunctional.

In a statement to CarAdvice, Lamborghini said: "It is possible that during the assembly an operator may have not correctly engaged (a) cable pin inside the internal door handles in a limited number of vehicles.

"Over time the internal door handle mechanism may fail and the door cannot be unlocked from the inside, posing an entrapment risk.

"This failure could lead to an inability to operate the handles from inside the vehicle with a safety risk in case of emergency."

Lamborghini said the outside handles on the affected vehicles were guaranteed by a different component and were therefore not affected and still able to be opened normally.

Owners of affected vehicles are being asked to contact an authorised Lamborghini dealer to have the internal door handles replaced free of charge.

The company says it is currently not aware of any incidents or injuries to drivers or passengers.

The Aventador has been recalled before – in 2018, the entire range was recalled over reports it could "stall without warning", while model-year 2017-19 Aventador S vehicles were recalled in late 2019 over an issue with the idle speed.
