2021 Hyundai i20N hot hatch caught on camera

First spy photos the Hyundai i30N’s baby brother. It’s cloaked in camouflage but here’s what we know so far.

The Hyundai i20N hot hatch has been spotted testing in the wild for the first time.

Although it’s cloaked in a heavy camouflage – and we can tell more about its appearance based on photoshop renderings (such as X-Tomi Design below) than these images taken on access roads to the Nurburgring in Germany – what we do know is that the Hyundai i20N is high on the priority list for Australia.

Hyundai is yet to even confirm the existence of – or plans for – the i20N, other than a teaser image at the end of a promotional video out of Europe last week (pictured below).

However, as reported last week, Hyundai Australia says it is keen to introduce the car here if it is made available in right-hand-drive.

While the Hyundai i30 N hot hatch is powered by a turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder matched to a six-speed manual (an eight-speed dual clutch auto is under development), the Hyundai i20 N would likely adopt the turbo 1.6-litre four-cylinder fitted to the Veloster and i30 N-Line 'warm' hatches, though this is yet to be confirmed.

The Hyundai turbo 1.6’s output of 150kW/265Nm compares to 147kW/290Nm for the upcoming turbo three-cylinder 1.5-litre Ford Fiesta ST and 147kW/320Nm for the current VW Polo GTI powered by a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder.

However, it’s also possible Hyundai could extract more power from this engine in i20N guise.

Hyundai Australia has not changed its position since we requested comment from them last week. At the time a Hyundai Australia spokesman said: “We would study the business case for any new N product if it became available. An i20 N would make sense given our i20 WRC program ... it's something we would be very interested in for our market.”
