Want to be Colin McRae? Now you can try, with Prodrive Legends

Championship-winning motorsport outfit Prodrive opens its doors to the public, now offers rebuilds, restorations and modifications to ex-race cars.

Fancy yourself as a World Rally Championship driver but just never had the right equipment? Now's your chance to get found out – or be discovered as the next hidden talent.

Championship-winning motorsport outfit Prodrive has announced it will launch 'Prodrive Legends', an authentication, restoration and support program for race and rally cars that were originally constructed by the UK firm.

Over a 36-year period, Prodrive built more than 700 Subaru rally cars, including 100 Group A Impreza and Legacy models (known as Liberty here), as well as a further 160 WRC-spec cars.

Many of these cars now reside in collections around the world, owned by privateer motorsport enthusiasts or by those who like to procure interesting vehicles in their spare time. The company also built a series of special edition WRX road cars, known as the P1 (pictured below).

If you prefer a European flavour, you can always take your pick from one the 40 BMW M3s out there, or one of the 230 Aston Martins that they’ve also created.

“If a client would like to own and compete with an original Colin McRae World Rally Championship car, we can advise on the purchase and rebuild it to precisely the specification that Colin raced that very car, using factory records and many of the same technicians,” says Paul Howarth, head of Prodrive motorsport operations.

“That’s something very special for many owners who like to be reassured everything is exactly as it was in-period, when their car was driven to victory by one of the great heroes of motorsport.”

Interestingly, most of the employees who assembled these cars the first time around are still employed by Prodrive, "We literally know (the cars) inside out, and many of the people we have on the Prodrive Legends team built the cars originally,” adds Howarth.

On top of restoration services, they offer a fixed-price certification program that ensures your precious pennies are only put into a genuine, original Prodrive chassis.

It turns out there is even a genuine Prodrive car for sale in Sydney, Australia.

Still adorned with the iconic 555 livery, ‘L555STE’ as it’s known, was driven by rally deities Colin McRae, Carlos Saintz, Ari Vatenen – and, importantly for Australian and New Zealand rally fans, Kiwi legend Peter ‘Possum’ Bourne.

The price? That's available on request only, as per the advertisement. However, the car has already been authenticated by the team at Prodrive.
