NSW Police Marine Search And Rescue takes delivery of Ram 1500 Crew Cab

After testing the big brother Ram 2500, water police in NSW now have a 1500 V8 to tow their fleet of jet skis and rescue boats.

The NSW Police Marine Search and Rescue Command has taken delivery of a new Ram 1500 Express Crew Cab to tow its fleet of Sea-Doo jet skis and large inflatable boats for safety patrols and recovery missions across the state.

The new model joins the larger Ram 2500 that has been used by NSW water police over the past two years.

The Ram 1500 Express Crew Cab ($89,950 plus on-road costs) was added to the local line-up earlier this year, filling the void between the price-leader Ram 1500 Express Quad Cab ($79,950 drive-away) and top-of-the-range Ram 1500 Laramie Crew Cab ($99,950 plus on-road costs).

Although it looks identical, the base model Ram 1500 Express Quad Cab in fact comes with a slightly smaller cabin and bigger cargo bed compared to the two Crew Cab models.

The Ram 1500 Express Crew Cab – the same type selected by police – misses out on the LED headlights, chrome grille and bumper of the Laramie, but it does get a vented bonnet, an upgraded dash display and a larger infotainment screen.

The Ram 1500 selected by police is powered by a 5.7-litre Hemi V8 (291kW/556Nm) and eight-speed auto and has a maximum 4500kg towing capacity. The Ram 2500 used by police is powered by a 6.7-litre in-line six-cylinder Cummins diesel (276kW/1084Nm) and has a maximum 6942kg towing capacity when a pintle hitch is used.

“These trucks go everywhere in NSW with the (Marine Area Command) enforcement team, from Tweed Heads down to the Murray,” said NSW Police Marine Command Superintendent, Stephen Hegarty, in a media statement issued by Ram Trucks Australia.

“The 4.5 tonne (maximum braked) towing is incredibly useful as it allows us to easily tow up to four jet skis at a time – or one of our bigger rigid inflatables – out to Dubbo, for example, for the Commissioner’s Rise Up youth program, compliance around boat safety on the water, or the South Coast to assist in the recent bushfire evacuations.”

Ram Trucks Australia began re-manufacturing left-hand-drive full-size US pick-ups to right-hand-drive in late 2015, before going on sale in early 2016.

The popular Ram 1500 came on stream in June 2018; the latest model – the Ram 1500 Express Crew Cab selected by NSW Police – went on sale in late February 2020.

Since ramping up to 24-hour production in April 2019, Ram Trucks Australia has sold more than 5000 locally-converted vehicles, the majority of which are the Ram 1500 version (pictured above).
