2020 Renault Kangoo pricing and specs

Updated French load-lugger rolls in with more creature comforts

The Renault Kangoo small cargo van has been updated for 2020. The update lineup comprises two variants, both of which now get more creature comforts than before.

Both now come standard with glazed 180-degree rear barn doors, a rear-view camera, automatic dusk-sensing headlights, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, and fog lights.

In return, the base Kangoo Compact short wheelbase (SWB) petrol costs an extra $1000, at $25,490 before on-road costs with a manual gearbox. The automatic is an extra $2500 extra, and cuts payload from 675kg to 540kg.

The Maxi long wheelbase (LWB) diesel no longer comes with a manual gearbox, with the remaining automatic once again $1000 more than the MY19 version at $31,490. It offers four cubic-metres of cargo space compared to the SWB’s three.

The formerly available Kangoo Crew model isn’t part of today’s update since it has been axed.

This new list of equipment comes atop existing features on both such as rear parking sensors, cruise control, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and driver/passenger front and side airbags.

If the basic audio system doesn’t float your boat, you can option a 7.0-inch screen running Renault’s R-Link software, with sat-nav and Android Auto (no mention of Apple CarPlay). This system costs $1000.

Two other option packs are available, called Trade and Business.

The $900 Trade Pack includes an anti-slip timber floor, full height timber side protection panelling and LED ceiling lights. The $1000 Business Pack adds 15-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, dark-tinted barn door glass and a two-tone front bumper.

An unglazed steel bulkhead can also be fitted for $350, and metallic paint can be selected for $660.

There are no changes to the engines. The Kangoo Compact has a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol making 84kW and 190Nm, mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch (EDC) auto. The Maxi uses a 81kW/240Nm 1.5-litre diesel and EDC combination.

Every Kangoo comes with a three-year and unlimited kilometre warranty. Three years of capped-price servicing is included with annual or 15,000km intervals. The first three visits servicing the petrol are $349, or $459 for the diesel. Coolant and brake fluid cost extra.

Kangoo customers also receive one year of free 24/7 roadside assistance. This is extended to four years when all services are completed at a Renault dealership.

For context, the Renault Kangoo remains an important member of the French company’s local range. The company sold 758 of them in 2018, enough for 28.4 per cent market share. It’s number-two in its class behind the dominant Volkswagen Caddy (1672 sales, 62.7 per cent share).

Looking further ahead, it's highly likely that the next iteration of the Kangoo due will go electric, as foreshadowed by the current generation Kangoo ZE. More on that here.
