Price rise for 2020 Mercedes-AMG G-Class
Mercedes-Benz fans who want to look like movie stars and hip hop artists will need to pay a little more to join the Hollywood elite.
The German car maker has raised the price for the boxy but iconic Mercedes G-Class – or G-Wagen – for 2020.
The 2020 Mercedes-AMG G63 now costs $259,600 (including GST and LCT but excluding on-road costs), compared with the 2019 pricing, which started at $251,400 plus on-road costs as of September 2019 – representing a bump of $8200.
It's a rise of $11,900 on the G63 that originally landed in Australia in August 2018 cost $247,700 plus on-road costs.
The price rise comes despite selling in limited numbers, with just 300 G-Class cars reported as sold in Australia in 2019, according to VFACTS data.
The current G63 boasts a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 engine capable of producing 430kW of power and 850Nm of torque.
That's paired with a nine-speed multi-clutch gearbox and a permanent all-wheel drive system.
While there are no specifications changes for 2020, G-Class buyers will still score a slew of equipment as standard.
Fittingly for its off-road pedigree, the car receives an in-built off-road information centre that provides the driver with information about altitude, compass, body angle, wheel angle and inclination.
A driving assistance package is standard, which includes active distance assist and blind spot assist.
Additionally, the G63 scores active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist, an anti-lock braking system, electronic traction and stability control, traffic sign assist, heat and noise laminated safety glass and a 360-degree camera.
There's also adaptive dampening with 'comfort, 'sport' and 'sport+' settings, plus three 100 per cent differential locks and an AMG sports exhaust system.
On the outside, metallic paint is available as standard, along with 21-inch alloy wheels with 285mm tyres and plenty of AMG-branded design flares.
Inside, there's Nappa leather upholstery as standard, with a 12.3-inch high-resolution infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, plus tech necessities like digital radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Night Package option – which includes obsidian black exterior accents, darkened indicators, tail lights and headlamps, 22-inch wheels and an AMG specific radiator grille – adds an extra $5900 to the final price (excluding on-road costs).
The Exclusive Interior Plus package option, adding more jazzy leather upholstery throughout, tacks $10,300 onto the purchase price (excluding ORCs) and an AMG enhancement package that increases the top speed from 220km/h to 240km/h adds $4000 before ORCs.
Mercedes-AMG quotes a combined-cycle fuel consumption of 13.1L/100km for the G63 and its 100-litre fuel tank, with a quoted 299g of carbon dioxide emitted per kilometre.
Mercedes-Benz has already confirmed an all-electric variant of the G-Class is on the cards, while a diesel-engined G63 was due in Australia this year. Drive has approached Mercedes-Benz for comment on the status of the diesel variant.
In 2019, Mercedes reported record-breaking global sales of the G-Class, delivering 34,912 vehicles, which marked a 13,000-unit increase on the 2017 record.
