Like the ‘regular’ RX-Vision before it though, the RX-Vision GT3 won’t become a production reality, but you will get to drive this one – as part of PlayStation’s Gran Turismo Sport video game.
Virtual specs for the dedicated race car include a 1250kg weight, mammoth 1720mm and1760mm front and rear tracks, a 2700mm wheelbase and 4590mm overall length, 2075mm width and 1120mm height.
Translated into real-world terms that makes the RX-Vision GT3 substantially wider than anything currently found in Mazda showrooms, with almost the same wheelbase as a Mazda 3 and a length that falls between hatch and sedan versions of the same. It’s lower than an MX-5, however and weighs 165kg more (1250kg), or at least it would, if it actually existed.
Compared to the soft surfacing and minimalist appearance of the RX-Vision concept, the GT3 version bulks up substantially with aggressively widened front guards packed full of heat-extracting vents, flared rear wheel arches to house the massive track and race rubber and an unmissable rear wing spouting from the boot lid.
Ground effects additions include deeper sills, a carbon front lip, an aero-channelling vented bonnet and a wildly-oversized diffuser beneath the rear bumper. Side exit exhausts are tucked under the front wings for added fire-breathing goodness.
There’s no mention of the engine under the bonnet, but the RX name indicates a digital representation of Mazda’s legendary rotary engine (official press info on the car drops ‘rotary’ into the discussion three times and frankly it'd be blasphemous if it were powered by anything else), so expect a ‘development’ of the SkyActiv-R engine from the 2015 concept, the outputs of which were never officially disclosed.
In this instance Mazda suggests a 419kW output, at least for Sony’s digital realm. Unlike utterly wild Vision Gran Turismo cars of the past, this GT3 version represents a more tempered, and possibly more realistic, bridge between the real world and the digital one.
Officially the car forms part of Gran Turismo’s new Gr.3 racing league, with Mazda signing on as an official partner of the FIA’s Certified Gran Turismo Championships. Mazda will also be represented as a manufacturer in all World Tour 2020 live events, including the championship-decider World Finals with both the RX-Vision GT3 and a Gr.3-spec version of the Mazda Atenza (known here as the Mazda 6).

The RX-Vision GT3 will be made available on Gran Turismo Sport via an online update on May 25.
