BMW 7 Series: Electric flagship now official

BMW has confirmed the next generation of its 7 Series will have an all-electric variant – and that it will be the most powerful version offered.

The electric 7 Series will exist alongside petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid models and all powertrains will share the same architecture, according to BMW board chairman, Oliver Zipse.

Speaking at the company's annual press conference, Zipse said: "The next-generation 7 Series will be available with four drive train variants: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully-electric. All drive trains will be based on a single architecture. And the top, most powerful 7 Series will be fully electric!"

Despite sharing its underpinnings with internal-combustion-engined siblings, the new electric 7 Series has been reported to offer a driving range of 700km and produce 485kW when optioned with a 120kWh battery pack

Whether the all-electric 7 Series will be the fastest option (or just the most powerful) is yet to be seen.

However, for the sake of context, the current top-performing 7 Series model will complete the 0-100km/h sprint in under four seconds, with a top speed of 250km/h, so it’s possible the electric version will match or better these figures.

There is also the possibility of an 80kWh option that borrows the hybrid system from BMW’s i4, however no specifications have been reported for this configuration.

While not confirmed, it’s possible the new model will wear the ‘i7’ badge.

The electric and hybrid 7 Series models will forge part of BMW’s goal to have 25 electrified models in its fleet by 2023.
