Ferrari F8 Spider surfs into Australia, priced from $536,888

Prancing Horse brand picks concrete jungle-bound surfing destination to launch its latest icon.

Revealing the latest convertible Ferrari amid man-made waves and pro-surfing demonstrations under a crystal clear dusky sky? I mean, why not!

The Ferrari F8 Spider is the open-top sun-tan version of the F8 Tributo V8 sports car. The Tributo name refers to design elements that offer a ‘tribute’ to V8 Ferraris of the past.

The quad taillights are a nod to a feature seen on many V8 Ferraris from the 308 to the F430, the transparent Lexan engine cover a hat-tip to the F40, and the integrated rear spoiler is similar to the aerodynamic implementation on the 308 and 328 models of the 1970s and ‘80s.

Unveiled at Melbourne's URBNSURF surfing facility by Dieter Knechtel, President Ferrari Far East and Middle-East Hub, and supported by Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal, Mattia Binotto and Formula 1 Driver, Charles Leclerc, the left-hand drive example was finished in Argento Nurburgring over a Cuoio (terracotta) and black interior.

At the heart of the F8 Spider is a 530kW / 770Nm 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8, proudly proclaimed as the most powerful V8 the Italian marque has ever produced for a road car.

The F8 Spider matches the output of the 488 Pista Spider, but sees a 38kW increase in power and a 10Nm increase in torque over the ‘regular’ 488 drop top, while weighing in at 20kg less.

The two-piece folding hardtop can be raised and lowered in 14 seconds, either while stationary or while the vehicle is on the move up to 45km/h.

The Spider was designed alongside the coupe so the aerodynamic and – perhaps more importantly – style impact of the open-top has been strongly considered as part of the F8’s development.

As with all current Ferrari models, the F8 Spider is offered with a seven-year maintenance program.

The $536,888 list price, a $52,000 premium over the coupe, is merely a starting point, with most Ferrari buyers adding a further 15% worth of personalisation options to specify their perfect example.

The F8 Spider is available to configure on the Ferrari website, how are you specifying yours? Me? Blu Tour De France over Sabbia, with forged Matt Grigio Corsa wheels. Tasteful, yet stunning.
