2020 New York motor show postponed after state declares first coronavirus containment zone

The 2020 New York motor show has been postponed to August, with the decision coming just hours after New York state announced its first coronavirus containment zone earlier today.

The event – which is officially called the New York Auto Show and was originally scheduled for April 10 – was voluntarily postponed by organisers and not at the order of New York state, according to AutoBlog.

New York has seen a recent spike in reported cases of coronavirus in the New Rochelle area, approximately 30km northeast of New York City, and has organised a containment zone surrounding the district.

News of the motor show's postponement comes just 12 days after the Swiss government cancelled the 2020 Geneva Motor Show following the implementation of legislation banning public gatherings of more than 1000 people in an attempt to prevent transmission of the virus.

The New York Auto Show will be rescheduled to August 2020, with media days running on the 26th and 27th, and the show open to the public from August 28 to September 6.

Rescheduling of the New York show means the Detroit motor show – which is currently set for June 7 to June 21 – will precede the New York show on the 2020 USA motor show roster.
