2021 Genesis G80 revealed: Australian debut later this year

New-generation luxury sedan unveiled online ahead of Korean-market launch in March.

The new-generation 2021 Genesis G80 has been unveiled online this week, ahead of an Australian launch scheduled to commence in the second half of 2020.

The new model has already been spied testing in Sydney, confirming it will benefit from the same local tuning program given to all Hyundai Australia and Genesis models.

As expected, the all-new G80 shares styling cues with the big new GV80 SUV and the recently face-lifted G90 limousine (not offered in Australia).

Like the GV80, the new G80 features a "double-lined Quadlamp" lighting signature at both ends, connected visually by what looks to be an additional double-lined daytime running light (or indicator, or both) in the front quarter guard.

The luxury brand's new 'Crest Grille' design features up front, and according to design boss Luc Donckerwolke – formerly of BMW – the grille and headlights combine to represent the winged Genesis logo.

"The design starts with the brand, and design is the brand," Donckerwolke says.

Sang Yup Lee, Senior Vice President, Head of Genesis Design, adds: “No matter what body type, sedan or SUV, the Quadlamps and Athletic Elegance design language present a distinctive brand identity, and this will enable Genesis to offer a fresh alternative within the existing luxury space.”

In profile view, the G80 features a four-door coupe design, building on the shape established with the current G80 (originally known simply as the Hyundai Genesis).

In the trim shown here, the G80 rides on 20-inch wheels, but smaller options will likely be either available or standard on lower-specification variants.

Inside, the new G80 brings over much of the big GV80's style, but with its own unique surfaces. Although similar in theme, the dash, centre console, steering wheel and door panels are all unique to the G80.

A large 14.5-inch tablet-like main display sits atop the dash, while wood, aluminium and gloss black highlights feature throughout.

Genesis has so far confirmed the new G80 will ride on a new platform (shared with the GV80), but powertrain details are still to be confirmed.

That said, we can likely expect the G80 to be offered with some or all of the systems featured in the GV80, which include a 207kW/422Nm 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 (reportedly making 283kW), and 279kW/588Nm inline six-cylinder diesel.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is also likely (again shared with the GV80 SUV), controlled by the drive-by-wire rotary dial visible in the centre console.

Which of those engines will come to Australia is still to be announced. The GV80 will come here with three engines, so we might see the same spread for the G80 – although the buyer profile for both cars is sure to be considerably different.

Although not confirmed in today's release, Genesis's "world first" Road-Noise Active Noise Control (RANC) technology will likely also feature. This system is said to dramatically cut road noise inside.

Another feature of the GV80 we should expect to see in the G80 is the active motion driver’s seat that contains air cells designed to reduce fatigue from long hours of driving.

Watch for more on the new G80 to be revealed after its Korean-market launch in March, and as we move closer to its Australian debut later this year.
