2020 Cupra Formentor unveiled for lucky Europe

The performance SUV marks the brand’s first exclusive model.

Cupra, the performance division of Spanish marque SEAT – a brand not seen in Australia for decades – has revealed its 2020 Formentor crossover coupe-style SUV.

The Formentor marks the first exclusive model under the Cupra banner. As with the wider Seat and Cupra lines, it won't be offered in Australia.

Available with a full-petrol or high performance plug-in hybrid powertrain, the Formentor looks to blend the practicality of an SUV with the performance Cupra is known for.

A familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine option from the Volkswagen family will produce 228kW and 400Nm, mated to a '4Drive' all-wheel drive system with torque-vectoring.

The plug-in hybrid variant will feature a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine outputting 110kW matched to a 13kWh battery pack and electric motor that generates 85kW. Peak power for the system is claimed at 180kW and 400Nm – on par with the 2020 Golf GTE and Octavia RS iV (neither of which are bound for Australia).

The Formentor can also be driven in electric-only mode with a range up to 50 kilometres.

Both options get a seven-speed DSG transmission, up from the six-speed to be used in the 2020 Leon Cupra.

Exterior colour comes in nine options: four soft metallic paints (Urban Silver, Midnight Black, Magnetic Tech and Candy White); three special paints (Graphene Grey, Dark Camouflage and Desire Red) as well as two matte paint options (Petrol Blue Matte and Magnetic Tech Matte).

The performance SUV rides on 19-inch wheels with the signature Cupra copper accents, and stops with Brembo brake callipers.

The Formentor comes in at 4.45 metres long and 1.84m wide with 450 litres of boot capacity. By comparison, the Audi RS Q3 comes in at 4.41m long and 1.84m wide, and offers 530L of boot space.

Bucket seats will come in Petrol Blue or black leather and are low-mounted in the cabin to improve the sports feel of the Formentor. Brushed dark aluminium and the signature copper coat certain trim pieces.

A 12-inch touchscreen adorns the dash equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay, plug-in Android Auto, and voice and gesture control.

Dynamic Chassis Control (the same seen as an option on the new sport-variants of Volkswagen Golfs) scans road surface conditions and adjusts shock absorber damping on the fly, to suit. Four driving modes are available, ranging through Comfort, Sport, ‘CUPRA’ and Individual.

Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection will come standard on the Formentor. Exit Assist will issue an audible warning of hazards when exiting the vehicle and an ‘eCall’ service will contact emergency services automatically in the case of an accident with the vehicle’s GPS data and number of occupants.

Hybrid models will also offer e-Manager – a smartphone application that allows owners to the vehicle’s charging status and control various amenities such as air conditioning.

The 2020 Formentor is expected to begin European deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2020.
