Joining Volkswagen's Golf GTE in the group's performance-oriented hybrid stable, the new 2020 Skoda Octavia RS iV has been unveiled today.
Available in liftback sedan and wagon styles, the RS iV models will join the regular new Octavia line-up, which will include conventional petrol-powered RS models.
The latter, in 180kW form, is the only performance option slated for Australia, with the local Volkswagen arm prioritising full-electric greenery over hybrid options.
As the latest in Skoda's iV-branded electrification range, the Octavia RS iV is a 'plug-in hybrid electric vehicle' (PHEV), pairing a petrol engine with an electric motor and a wall-chargeable lithium-ion battery pack.
As with the Golf GTE, the RS iV matches a 1.4-litre 110kW turbo petrol engine to an 85kW/330Nm electric motor for a combined 180kW and 400Nm. The battery pack's capacity is rated at 13kWh.
Power is sent to the front wheels only, directed there through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Acceleration to 100km/h is listed at 7.3 seconds, which falls well short of the 6.6-second sprint claimed by the existing Octavia RS245. Skoda hasn't gone into specifics, but we can likely attribute the difference to the extra weight of its battery pack and electric drive system.
The RS iV's performance should prove sufficient for likely buyers, though, and its WLTP-tested "up to" 60-kilometre electric driving range will be the bigger point of appeal for many.
Also of interest will be its compliance with Euro 6d emissions requirements, which take effect next year. WLTP-tested CO2 emissions for the Octavia RS iV are rated at 30g/km.
On the styling front, the Octavia RS iV looks the part of a proper RS, with 18-inch wheels as standard and 19-inch options available, along with the requisite RS styling and lowered sports suspension package.
2021 Skoda Octavia for Australia
The new Octavia is a year away from Australian showrooms, with a local launch set to occur in the first quarter of 2021.
