Hyundai Prophecy electric concept is a study in curves – UPDATE

Korean carmaker pushes further into its own with a new look at its 'Sensuous Sportiness' design philosophy.

UPDATE: With the Hyundai Prophecy concept robbed of a proper motor show unveiling, Hyundai Motor Group’s Chief Design Officer Luc Donckerwolke has delivered a walkaround tour of the car on video. You can check out both videos at the bottom of this story.

March 4, 2020: Hyundai has thrown another curveball for punters looking to predict the future of its styling themes, with the unveiling today of its new Prophecy concept.

Although light on technical detail, the Prophecy is described as the next stage in its 'Sensuous Sportiness' design philosophy, building on the "era-defining example" that was the electric 45 SUV concept.

But, where the 45 was mostly a study in minimalistic geometry through sharp angles, the Prophecy appears to explore the question of how far a design can be taken with a protractor alone.

Hyundai says its has endowed its latest show car with "an iconic silhouette of perfect proportions", arriving at the "Ultimate Automotive Form".

The company goes on to say that the sleek lines of the Prophecy provide optimal aerodynamics, while the propeller shapes in the wheel design work to compel air along the body "like water over a stone".

Like the 45, this latest concept features a pixel-inspired lighting design, integrated into the headlights, tail lights and spoiler. This feature, if not the rest of the concept's styling, is called out as an aspect we can expect to see in future production Hyundai models.

Inside, the Prophecy focuses on autonomous driving, doing away with the conventional steering wheel – but maintaining human control through the use of joysticks mounted in the arm rests.

The rest of the cabin focuses on cinema-like comfort, with wide reclined seats and an uninterrupted view both of the main display and the world outside.

As a purely style-focused concept, Hyundai offers no details on the Prophecy's drive package. The company has confirmed in recent months, however, that it intends to launch 44 new electric and hybrid models by 2025.

With a name like Prophecy, it may be that we can expect this design, or something like it, to figure among those 44.
