Munich motor show to begin in 2021, replacing Frankfurt

Munich has won its bid to host the German leg of the international motor show roster, beating out Berlin and Hamburg for the honours.

The decision comes after a decision by the German Association of the Automotive Industry lobby (VDA) to axe the Frankfurt motor show earlier this year, due to dwindling attendance numbers and public interest.

The VDA claims that having Munich as a venue will help “restart” the international automotive exhibition, referencing Munich’s “intelligent traffic concepts” and “innovative networking of modes of transport” that are “sustainable and geared to people’s needs” as major influencing factors in the decision.

BMW’s headquarters is also located in Munich, with Audi's in nearby Ingolstadt, however the brands are not mentioned in VDA’s statement.

The move to Munich will mark a fundamental change in the running of the motor show that had seen waning participation of carmakers in recent years.

The VDA states that by offering event locations close to the centre of Munich, the city can be ”connected to the modern exhibition centre via a transfer route including priority tracks for environmentally friendly vehicles".

“In addition to the halls, the VDA will bring the [exhibition] onto the streets, into the city and thus directly to the people," the VDA said.

The Munich motor show will commence in 2021, rotating with the Paris motor show on a biennial basis as the Frankfurt show had. An exact date has not been set.

VDA’s announcement comes only a day after the 2020 Geneva motor show was scheduled to run, but was cancelled due to fears of Coronavirus spread.

The Geneva motor show’s cancellation saw many carmakers turn to online reveals – a growing trend as manufacturers move away from motor shows in general.
