2020 Morgan Plus Four revealed with new architecture and BMW power

It also gets a slight name change and a range of updates

Morgan has revealed a new Plus Four model, slotting in beneath the Plus Six with the same new 'CX' aluminium architecture and a new BMW-sourced engine.

Celebrating 70 years of the model this year, this new variant also gets a slight change to its name over the Plus 4; this time spelling the number four.

With 97 per cent of its components declared new, the British company claims it to be the “most revolutionary advancement in the model’s history”.

Replacing Ford's non-turbo Duratec engine, its new engine from BMW is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, producing 167kW and 400Nm, with a top speed of 239km/h.

Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it promises to get to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds. If you go with the six-speed manual gearbox, that sprint is done in 5.2 seconds – and you'll also lose 50Nm in order to protect the transmission. Decisions, decisions...

The BMW-sourced engine has a claimed fuel economy reading of 7.0L/100kms and is also 30 per cent less polluting than the Duratec engine.

Using the same all-new bonded aluminium platform from the bigger Plus Six – which replaces an 84-year-old steel chassis – the Plus Four weighs 1009 kilograms, and features refreshed brakes, ABS, and power steering.

Other new features include automatic LED lights, 15-inch alloy wheels, remote central locking, lumbar seat adjustment, sun visors, door straps, and the choice of a black mohair convertible roof.

Over the standard 15-inch alloys, new wire wheels are an option, along with a stereo system that is cleverly hidden behind the cabin trim, and metallic paint can also be chosen. A luggage rack and/or a spare wheel can be bolted to the rear.

The Plus Four was due to be revealed at the 2020 Geneva motor show today, but organisers were forced to cancel the show late last week due to Coronavirus.

It is on sale now in the UK for £62,995 (AUD$123,300).

Will the Morgan Plus Four come to Australia?

Morgan has distributorship in Australia, but the company has yet to confirm local availability. CarAdvice has contacted the company for comment.
