2020 McLaren 765LT revealed

British supercar-builder McLaren has today announced its newest model, the 765LT.

Built as a track-focused, road-legal supercar, the 765LT follows in the same ‘longtail’ design spirit originally seen on the McLaren F1 GTR in the 1990s.

As it has done for some time now, power comes from a mid-mounted 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine utilising twin-scroll turbocharger technology, forged aluminium pistons and carbon-coated valve train hardware.

Drive

The result is a claimed output of 563kW at 7500rpm and 800Nm at 5500rpm.

Mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with a claimed shift-time 15 per cent faster than the 720S, McLaren says the 765LT will do the 0-100km/h sprint in 2.8 seconds, breeze past 200km/h in 7.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 330km/h.

The marque doesn’t go into specifics, but also claims the 765LT will run the quarter mile in less than ten seconds.

However, weight is the enemy of speed and McLaren appears to have put just as much energy into stripping weight from the 765LT as it has pumping power in.

Despite measuring in at 4.6 metres long and 2.2m wide (including side mirrors), the 765LT tips the scales at 1339kg using the German DIN system.

Lightweight materials are used wherever possible. The 765LT’s chassis features carbon-fibre components throughout, including its aero package which sees a front splitter, bumper, front floor, side skirts, rear bumper and diffuser and large active rear wing all comprised of the lightweight material.

The aero package also contributes to a downforce-to-drag ratio improvement of 20 per cent over the 720S.

Carbon fibre seats, centre tunnel and floor with trims upholstered in lightweight Alcantara material save weight inside. Thinner glass saves weight and gives drivers more access to the V8’s soundtrack.

A quad-tip exhaust system is fabricated from titanium piping, providing a claimed 40 per cent weight saving over an equivalent steel unit. The exotic metal also finds its way into the wheel bolts to reduce rotational inertia.

Drive

The 765LT comes standard without air conditioning or a sound system. However, for buyers who prioritise a sound system over the 1.5kg saved by going without, a four-speaker system with radio and smartphone connectivity can be optioned at no additional cost.

Buyers can also option a fully-fledged “world-class” sound system but that will come at additional cost.

The 765LT rides on 10-spoke, forged aluminium wheels with a 19-inch diameter up front and 20-inch in the rear. Pirelli has produced bespoke P Zero Trofeo R “circuit-bred” tyres for use on the supercar.

Drive

Behind the lightweight wheels sit carbon-ceramic brake discs with callipers borrowed from the Senna.

McLaren claims the clamping force of this setup will stop the 765LT from 100km/h in only 29.5m. That’s less than one metre longer than a standard basketball court.

Adaptive suspension and ‘Proactive Chassis Control II’ will offer three preset suspension modes: Comfort, Sport and Track.

The 765LT will be available in 17 body colours – ‘Nardo Orange’ and ‘Smoked White’ being unique to the model. Interiors can be customised in three tiers, with eight base colour themes able to be optioned through to the stitching on seats and doors.

Two track-catered packages can be optioned on the 765LT. The MSO Clubsport option adds the same carbon fibre racing seats as fitted to the McLaren Senna with bespoke LT pads, McLaren Track Telemetry (which provides a lap timing function) and carbon fibre air vents.

Drive

The MSO Clubsport Pro pack includes all features of the Clubsport package with the addition of a titanium harness bar and six-point harness, but will only be fitted to vehicles sold in regions that permit use of the equipment.

Just 765 of the 765LT will be built and available globally, each with an individual number.
