Volvo C40, XC100: compact coupe SUV and giant luxury flagship in the works – report

New models widen the Swedish marque’s line-up.

According to unnamed dealer sources in the UK, Volvo is planning to add two new crossovers to its lineup, as reported by Automotive News.

The new C40 and XC100 will, the report claims, slot into Volvo’s line-up beneath the XC40 and above the XC90 respectively.

Volvo’s all-electric C40 will be a small, coupe-style SUV catered towards younger buyers. The dealer sources claim the C40 will be “diminutive” and a “sporty-looking version of the XC40”.

The model should share the same grille as the XC40 Recharge P8, however the C40 will be distinguished by a sloping roofline and new tail-light design.

According to the sources, Volvo expects to sell approximately 8000 C40s per year.

The report suggests the XC100 will share a platform with the XC90, however the overall size will be bigger – the XC100 expected to come in roughly 18cm longer and 13cm wider than the XC90.

A shared parts catalogue between the XC100 and XC90 should also keep development costs down.

XC100s will be available in six or seven seat configurations, with third-row access improved by way of "captains' chairs" in the second row.

Luxury should be a major emphasis of the XC100, with sources stating the model is an XC90, Range Rover and Rolls Royce Cullinan “all in one”.

Volvo has tried similar strategies before, with the XC90 Excellence and Lounge Console concept – although both were merely advancements of the existing XC90 package.

The new models are part of Volvo’s electrification strategy that sees each new vehicle in the line-up receive some form of electric power through either a hybrid system or full-electric power train.

The C40 is expected in the second half of 2021. The XC100 should make an appearance in late 2023 with an electric version in 2024.
