Audi A8 recalled for power steering leak, potential fire hazard

Power steering componentry in the marque’s flagship sedan could be susceptible to failure.

Audi Australia has issued a recall of 108 of its flagship luxury A8 sedan models affected by a faulty steering component.

Audi's recall includes the 2010-2013 A8 4H fitted with the petrol V8 or W12, and the 2012-2016 A8 Security (an armoured version of a regular A8 intended for civilian security) fitted with the petrol V8 or W12.

Lodged with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the defect pertains to a fluid return hose in the vehicles’ power steering system.

This hose may leak under high-stress conditions such as hard steering, full-lock of the steering wheel or severe vibration due to road surface.

If the leak is severe enough, the driver could see a reduced or complete loss of power steering assist. There is also the potential for leaked hydraulic fluid to ignite on hot engine components and cause a fire.

Audi Australia is reaching out to owners of affected vehicles for inspection and replacement of the faulty unit.

A full list of vehicle identification numbers of the 108 cars included in the recall can be found here.

If you believe your vehicle might be affected, contact the Audi Australia 24 hour toll-free number on 1800 50 AUDI (2834).
