Mercedes-Benz reveals PHEV versions of CLA and GLA
The German brand is expanding its EQ Power range, but the newcomers won't be making it to Australia.
Mercedes-Benz has announced the upcoming European arrival of three new plug-in hybrid offerings under its EQ Power brand, revealing its CLA Coupe, CLA Shooting Brake and GLA will be available with the new powertrain option – but not in Australia.
The German marque debuted the new members of its compact-car family online on Tuesday morning AEDT, presumably in lieu of an in-person debut at the now-cancelled 2020 Geneva Motor Show.
The CLA 250e Coupe, CLA 250e Shooting Brake and GLA 250e will all score the third-generation hybrid drive system, which consists of a 15.6 kilowatt-hour battery pack, plus a 1.33-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 75kW electric motor that together produce up to 160kW of power and 450Nm of torque.
The new models can be charged with alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) chargers and can go from 10 per cent to 80 per cent charge in around 25 minutes when using a 24kW fast charger.
The electric-only range of the vehicles varies from model to model, with the cited NEDC figures clocking in at anywhere between 71 to 79 kilometres on a single charge, with the GLA 250e's range the lowest at 64-71km. WLTP figures are usually more conservative.
As for performance? According to Mercedes, the CLA 250e Coupe can sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds, with a top speed of 235km/h, the CLA shooting brake takes 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 235km/h, and the GLA 250e takes 7.1 seconds with a top speed of 220km/h.
While pricing is yet to be revealed, Mercedes-Benz said the three models will be available for order in Europe from the Northern Hemisphere's spring (likely sometime in March 2020) and the market launch will follow a few weeks later.
Australia:
A representative for Mercedes-Benz said the three PHEV variants announced today would not be available in the Australian market.
Instead, Mercedes-Benz will add the A 250e plug-in hybrid in both sedan and hatch form to its Australian lineup before the middle of the year.
