Cutesy Citroen Ami micro EV revealed for Europe

An increased driving range is often considered make-or-break for electric vehicles, but Citroen’s Ami bucks the trend in favour of accessibility

Citroen has revealed its 2020 Ami, a micro-electric vehicle (EV) designed for accessibility in European cities.

While some see increased battery pack output and driving range as a make-or-break for electric vehicles (especially in larger countries such as Australia), Citroen has focused its attention on the other end of the spectrum.

Coming in at only 2.41 metres long, 1.39m wide (excluding the side mirrors) and 1.52m high with a turning-circle of only 7.2m, the Ami is purpose-built for urban dwellings.

By comparison, an LEVC TX – the leader in its class for turning-circle – requires 8.45m.

Power in the Ami comes via a 5.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack outputting 6kW. The battery can be fully-charged in three hours using a conventional 220 volt outlet.

These figures make for a driving range of 71km with a top speed of 45km/h – solidifying the 485kg Ami as a city-cruiser not meant to see back-roads or freeways.

The Ami’s size and power output also means it avoids some European licensing conditions.

Technically classed as a ‘light quadricycle’, drivers as young as 14 years old can operate the Ami on public roads in France, with an average age of 16 years required for operation in other European markets.

Wrap-around windows and a panoramic sunroof should offset any claustrophobia the Ami’s small dimensions might inspire in occupants and drivers will gain additional accessibility via a rear-hinged driver’s-side door. Passenger doors will remain conventionally front-hinged.

The interior is kept minimal yet functional. Featuring no infotainment screen, the Ami comes with a holder for a smartphone to act as navigation and entertainment. The Ami will connect and communicate with the phone via an app, relaying essential information to the screen.

Pricing for the 2020 Ami starts from €6000 (AU$10,030), with options for car-sharing and long-term rental.

Free2Move car-sharing option is available at €0.26 ($0.45) per minute with a commitment-free monthly subscription of €9.90 (AU$16.55) and long-term rental starts from €19.99 (AU$33.50) per month after an initial payment of €2644 (AU$4430).

As further incentive, France also offers an ecological bonus deduction of €900 (AU$1505) for long-term rental and outright purchase.

Citroen will open orders in France on March 30th 2020, with Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and Germany to come in the following months. First deliveries in France are expected in June.

Free2Move car-sharing of the Ami will commence in the second quarter of 2020 in Paris.
