Toy time warp: Micro Machines make a return

If you were a child in the '90s, you may remember Micro Machines. The tiny plastic toy cars were a third of the size of a Matchbox or Hot Wheels car and were affordable, light, and very easy to lose.

33 years after originally being released by Galoob in 1987, Micro Machines will be racing back into stores - this time made by Hasbro - after a first viewing at the 2020 New York Toy Fair this week. 

When Galoob was bought by Hasbro in 1998, it marked the end of Micro Machines. The company did briefly bring them back twice, including releasing a set for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, but they never lived up to the success of the '80s and '90s. 

This time, Hasbro is giving it another crack, teaming up with Wicked Cool Toys. 

The revival will also include the iconic Super Van City, which is a van that folds out into a playset to reveal a miniature city, including a suspension bridge, race tracks, a drag strip, an airport, and most importantly, a donut shop, amongst the 20 play locations. But, this time it looks less like a people mover, and more like a Sprinter. 

Official photos of the new Micro Machines have not been released, but a video taken from the toy fair shows dozens of new models, including Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari, Ford, Dodge, Jeep, and an assortment of commercial, emergency, and armoured vehicles. It is unclear if the models are licensed by car brands. The most noticeable differences from the old and new, are the wheels have grown considerably in size, undoubtedly matching the look of today's real cars.  

The new Micro Machines will be available later this year, with pricing for the Super Van City to be around USD$75 (AUD$114), and will include three cars.
