2020 DS 9 flagship revealed, hybrid included

DS first teased the model back in 2012, but now the luxury saloon has a release scheduled.

French marque DS will launch its new Chinese-built luxury saloon flagship DS 9 model this year after teasing it all the way back in 2012.

Owned by the PSA Group, DS's luxury saloon will share Peugeot architecture with the comparable wheelbase 5008 model.

This follows on from the DS3 Crossback which borrows a platform from the Peugeot 208 and the Peugeot 3008 GT Hybrid4 that lends its underpinnings to the DS7 Crossback E-Tense 4x4.

The DS 9 will be available in three power trims with two of them utilising E-Tense plug in hybrid technology.

Petrol-only models will generate 168kW, while a two-wheel drive hybrid option will output 168kW. An all-wheel drive hybrid 268kW option fills out the top spec.

All models will come with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The E-Tense hybrid system will generate 80kW and 320Nm thanks to a 11.9kWh battery pack, capable of running on battery power alone with a range of 40-50km at speeds of up to 135km/h.

A 7.4kW onboard charger can refill the battery in 90 minutes at compatible charging points.

Rear passengers will not go wanting for legroom in the DS 9. While the saloon’s overall length comes in at 4.93m, almost three metres of that is made up between the front and rear wheels.

‘DS Lounge’ takes the premise further, with rear seats to be heated, cooled and even featuring a massage function.

Interiors will come in four trim palettes: Bastille, Rivoli, Performance and Opera.

Driver attention and blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking and extended traffic sign recognition are set to come standard on the DS 9.

The DS 9 will also feature level two semi-autonomous driving, with assistance at speeds up to 180km/h.

Active Scan Suspension tech will utilise a camera to seek out imperfections in upcoming roads and prepare the damping of individual wheels. The tech sets out to improve comfort but should also double as a safety feature, ensuring each tyre remains planted to the road.

The DS 9 is planned for sale in China in the first half of 2020. It’s unclear if the release date will be affected by the Coronavirus that has hindered car manufacturing in the country recently.
