2020 BMW X5 M and X6 M Competition pricing and specs

Beastly Bavarian mega SUVs hitting Australia in May, toting 460kW V8s and 3.8 second 0-100km/h times

The hardcore BMW X5 M and X6 M mega SUVs will rumble into Australian showrooms this May in their hardcore ‘Competition’ forms, delivering claimed supercar-like 0-100km/h acceleration times of 3.8 seconds.

At the same time, buyers will have to fork over a fair chunk of change more than the (non-Competition-spec) previous generation models commanded. The brand new X5 M will cost $209,900 before on-road costs (up $24,000), while the X6 M will be $213,900 (up $19,200).

Under the bonnet of both the X5 M and X6 M sits a 4.4-litre TwinPower turbo V8 engine largely shared with the M5 and M8 Competition, making 460kW and 760Nm, which is 37kW an 10Nm more than the old models. That 0-100km/h time cited atop the story comes despite kerb weights of around 2.3 tonnes for each.

In typical BMW form, the twin-scroll turbochargers (which perform best at differing RPM) are stuffed inside the V-shaped cylinder banks. There’s also a super-strong forged crankshaft, fully variable valve timing, and 10 individual water and oil cooling sources.

BMW Australia hasn’t cited fuel economy figures yet, but it’s certain that these models will use less fuel than the old model’s 11.1L/100km, which was itself 20 per cent more efficient than its own predecessor.

The engine is mated to an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission, and is relieved by a quad-piped (100mm) active exhaust system. BMW says the car's sports exhaust delivers an "emotionally stirring soundtrack", so expect plenty of histrionics.

Both also get multi-mode adaptive suspension that changes damper firmness by mode, speed-sensitive Servotronic steering, rear-axle-biased but fully-variable M xDrive all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, and an active M differential to allocate said torque across the rear axle.

BMW says the chassis and suspension components were “painstakingly tested” in places such as Mirimas in the south of France, Arjeplog in the north of Sweden and the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife in Germany. The front suspension features a double-wishbone setup with forged upper control arms while the rear suspension is a five-link design. Both cars also get extra chassis bracing and increased front camber.

Both also get Adaptive M suspension Professional with Active Roll Stabilisation. Data from body movement, road surface conditions and steering movements is collected from sensors and is used to actively adjust the damper and stabilisation bar settings in milliseconds.

Hauling in the huge kerb weight are “racetrack ready” brakes measuring 395mm at the front and 380mm at the rear. The fronts feature six-piston calipers and the rear single-piston floating calipers. They’ll bring each car from 100km/h to stop in a claimed 32 metres. As in the M8 Competition, the various driving modes also elicit two levels of braking feel, so in Sport the pedal response is firmer and sharper than in Comfort.

Both vehicles feature M light alloy wheels with star-spoke style design shod with 295/35 section tyres on the front and 315/30 section tyres on the rear.
