Volkswagen Golf GTI debuting at Geneva motor show

Concept renders give a sneak peek of the new German hot hatch before its official unveiling.

Volkswagen has released concept renderings of its new Golf GTI ahead of a Geneva motor show debut in March.

Volkswagen's render shows a vastly different front end design for its GTI than what has been seen on the standard Golf.

The 2021 GTI's front grille extends across the width of its bumper and features fog lights comprised of a quintet of (presumably) LEDs inside the honeycomb pattern.

A similar front-end has already been teased for the new Golf GTD, so the design looks to be a main distinguishing feature between standard and sport model Golfs.

The new grille design doesn't hold too many secrets however, having already been revealed late last year as the face of Volkswagen’s plug-in hybrid Golf GTE, albeit with some minor detail differences.

As is customary for GTIs, a red pinstripe accents the nose of the car – something augmented by the option for an illuminated crossbar section, new on the Mk8 GTI.

Volkswagen says the new GTI will receive a twin exhaust outlet that places a pipe on either side of a rear diffuser.

Power is expected to be rated at 180kW for a standard GTI and 221kW for the GTI TCR. Australian delivery of the TCR (expected to replace the Performance Pack) has not yet been confirmed.

Volkswagen claim the eighth-generation GTI will feature a digital cockpit and a redesigned multifunction leather steering wheel with touch control. The marque also lists adaptive chassis control.

Safety appears to be a focus of the new generation GTI. In a claimed first for its class, the new GTI is set to feature ‘Travel Assist’ that provides partial steering assistance to drivers at speeds up to 210km/h.

The model might also see another claimed first in its segment, with the addition of ‘Car2X’ – a system that lets cars communicate with nearby infrastructure, allowing suitably-equipped roads to warn of emergency conditions such as breakdowns or sudden braking manoeuvres.

The 2020 Golf GTI is set to debut at the Geneva motor show running March from 5th to 15th.

Australian deliveries of the Mk8 Golf range are expected to begin late in 2020.
